From its original title “Los autonautas de la cosmopista” and subtitled “Un voyage intemporel Paris-Marseille”, “Les Autonautes de la cosmoroute” is an ethnographic novel by the writing couple Julio Cortázar and Carol Dunlop, published in Spanish in 1983 and in French the same year by Gallimard. It recounts the couple's long thirty-two day journey in a Volkswagen combi on the Autoroute du Soleil, between Paris and Marseille. Like explorers, they document the 75 rest areas they visit with a logbook, photographs and drawings. They describe in detail the landscapes, the people they meet and the dangers and threats they face on this illegal adventure, since it is forbidden to stay on a motorway service area for more than twenty-four hours.
